Improving Communication Skills for Learning and Social Participation

Understanding the extent of an individual’s communication abilities is important for social and academic success

This evaluation includes standardized and informal tests as well as play-based assessments addressing the student’s language comprehension, verbal expression, and nonverbal communication skills.

CCSN’s evaluators specialize in the assessment of children with a range of communication challenges, including those with: Autism Spectrum Disorders, language or learning disabilities, auditory processing disorders, neurologic impairments, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, phonological disorders, and Developmental Verbal Dyspraxia.

  • Evaluators have specific expertise in the evaluation of children with a range of communication challenges including those with: Autism Spectrum diagnoses and developmental disabilities, Language or learning disabilities, Auditory processing disorders, Neurologic impairments, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Phonological disorders, and Developmental verbal dyspraxia
  • The two to three hour evaluation includes standardized tests, as well as informal tests or play-based assessments addressing the student’s understanding of language, verbal expression, and nonverbal communication skills.

Aspects of language that are assessed by standardized measures include:

  • Semantics - vocabulary and meaning of language
  • Morpho-syntactic - grammatical forms
  • Phonological - speech sounds and sound patterns necessary for effective communication and literacy skills
  • Pragmatic - social communication, including verbal and nonverbal means
  • Additional aspects of speech - articulation, prosody, fluency and rate are also comprehensively assessed
  • Oral Examination - of oral and oral-peripheral (face shape, teeth, gums, jaw) structures and functions

After the assessment, families participate in a feedback session where test results are reviewed and specific recommendations for treatment planning are provided. A report is then prepared and sent to families and other service providers as appropriate.
